About the CELPIP Listening test
The CELPIP Listening test runs 46 to 55 minutes across six parts: problem solving, a daily life conversation, information, a news item, a discussion, and a viewpoints segment. Each clip plays once only, so the skill being tested is catching detail the first time.
Select a part to hear a clip and answer the questions that follow. Results appear immediately, so you can see whether you are missing numbers, names, opinions, or the speaker's overall attitude.
Listening is reported as its own level from 0 to 12, and from level 3 up that number is your CLB listening level. Most economic immigration programs ask for CLB 7 in every skill, so it is worth checking which band your accuracy currently sits in rather than assuming listening is your strongest skill.
This module is still being expanded, and new audio sets are added regularly.
CELPIP Listening Practice - FAQ
46 to 55 minutes across six parts: problem solving, a daily life conversation, information, a news item, a discussion, and a viewpoints segment. There are 38 scored questions, split 8, 5, 6, 5, 8 and 6. Some tests also carry unscored questions used for test development, which you cannot tell apart from the rest.
No, and that is the point. Every clip plays once only in the real exam, so the skill being tested is catching detail the first time rather than reviewing it. Practice here follows the same rule, which is uncomfortable at first and is exactly why it transfers.
Yes. Note-taking is allowed in the real exam and worth practising deliberately. Short notes on names, numbers, and who holds which opinion tend to be more useful than trying to write full sentences, since writing too much means missing the next line.
CLB 8. CELPIP-General reports a level from 0 to 12 for each skill, and from level 3 up that level is already your CLB level, so no conversion is needed. Our CELPIP score chart page has the full table and the minimum each immigration program asks for.
In the news item and discussion parts, questions usually target the speaker attitude rather than the facts. Track who is arguing what, and whether they agree, hedge, or object. Missing numbers and names is easy to fix with practice; missing an attitude is what usually separates a listening 7 from a 9.
It is the newest section and still being expanded, with new audio sets added regularly. Reading, Writing, and Speaking are fuller. If a part has fewer sets than you need right now, working through Reading alongside it is the closest substitute for practising comprehension under time pressure.
