CELPIP Time Management: How to Use Every Minute Wisely

Many CELPIP test-takers lose marks not because they lack English skills, but because they run out of time. The test is about 3 hours long with no breaks between sections, and each section has strict time limits.

This guide gives you a clear time plan for every section — Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking — so you know exactly how to divide your time on test day.

Total Test Timeline

The CELPIP-General test is completed in one sitting with no scheduled breaks. Here is how the time breaks down:

SectionParts / TasksQuestionsTime
Listening6 parts3847–55 minutes
Reading4 parts3855–60 minutes
Writing2 tasks253–60 minutes
Speaking8 tasks815–20 minutes
TotalAbout 3 hours

The order is always the same: Listening first, then Reading, Writing, and Speaking last. There is no way to go back to a previous section once it is finished.

Listening: Time Plan (47–55 minutes)

The listening section moves at a set pace — you cannot control the speed. Each recording plays only once, and you have a few seconds to answer before the next question appears.

PartNameQuestionsApprox. Time
1Problem Solving8~8 min
2Daily Life Conversation5~5 min
3Listening for Information6~6 min
4News Item5~5 min
5Discussion8~9 min
6Viewpoints6~8 min

Time tips:

  • Use the 15–30 seconds before each recording to preview the questions and identify keywords
  • If you miss an answer, do not dwell on it — the audio will not wait for you
  • Select an answer for every question — there is no penalty for wrong answers
  • Keep your notes brief: just keywords, numbers, and names

Reading: Time Plan (55–60 minutes)

Unlike Listening, you manage your own clock in the Reading section. The timer runs continuously across all 4 parts, so how you divide your time is up to you.

PartNameQuestionsSuggested Time
1Correspondence11~11 min
2Diagram8~9 min
3Information9~13 min
4Viewpoints10~13 min

Time tips:

  • Read questions first, then scan the passage for answers — this is faster than reading the whole text first
  • Spend no more than 60–90 seconds per question — if you are stuck, guess and move on
  • Parts 3 and 4 are longer and harder — save enough time for them
  • Do not skip Part 2 (diagrams) — it is often the easiest part and a chance for quick points
  • There is no penalty for wrong answers — never leave a question blank

Writing: Time Plan (53–60 minutes)

The writing section has two tasks with separate timers. Each task has its own countdown, so you cannot borrow time from one to use on the other.

TaskNameTimeWord CountSuggested Breakdown
1Writing an Email27 min150–200 words5 min plan, 17 min write, 5 min review
2Survey Response26 min150–200 words4 min plan, 18 min write, 4 min review

Time tips:

  • Always plan before writing. Spending 4–5 minutes on a quick outline saves time in the long run because you will not get stuck mid-sentence wondering what to write next
  • Always review at the end. Even 3–4 minutes of proofreading can catch spelling mistakes, missing words, and awkward sentences
  • Aim for about 200 words — writing fewer than 150 suggests underdeveloped ideas
  • For Task 1, write one paragraph per bullet point from the prompt
  • For Task 2, use a 4-paragraph structure: introduction, reason 1, reason 2, conclusion

Speaking: Time Plan (15–20 minutes)

The speaking section moves at a set pace, similar to listening. Each task has a fixed preparation time and a fixed speaking time. When the timer runs out, the recording stops.

TasksPrep TimeSpeaking Time
Tasks 1–2 (Advice, Personal Experience)30 sec90 sec
Tasks 3–4 (Scene, Predictions)30 sec60 sec
Tasks 5–8 (Persuading, Difficult Situation, Opinions, Unusual Situation)60 sec60 sec

Time tips:

  • During prep time, jot down 2–3 key points — do not write full sentences
  • Fill the entire speaking time. If you finish early, add another detail or example. Short responses score lower
  • For 90-second tasks (Tasks 1–2), plan for 3 main points to fill the time
  • For 60-second tasks, plan for 2 main points
  • If you make a mistake, keep going — do not restart or waste time correcting yourself

What to Do When You Are Running Out of Time

Even with good planning, you may fall behind. Here is what to do in each section:

SectionWhat to Do
ListeningIf you miss a question, select your best guess immediately and focus on the next one. Do not think back.
ReadingIf you have 2 minutes left and unanswered questions, quickly select the most logical answer for each. A guess is better than a blank.
WritingIf time is short, write a brief conclusion (1 sentence) rather than leaving the response unfinished. An incomplete structure hurts more than a short ending.
SpeakingIf you run out of things to say, repeat your main point in different words or add one more small detail. Do not stop early.

Quick Summary

  • The full CELPIP-General test takes about 3 hours with no breaks
  • Sections always go in order: Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking
